2024 X Place Game Jam Showcase (Top 10 game)
Remembering Diane is a game made by the Moss Scone team for the XPlace 2024 Game Jam. The game was selected to selected to the game jam's showcase as one of the top 10 games as selected by the judges.
I served as the lead narrative designer and as a gameplay designer for the game. The theme of the game jam was travel and the design team developed an idea for a trivia-style game where the player would look at an obscure object that would become less obscured as the player asked questions about the object. I came up with the idea to make a game about a woman suffering from degenerative memory loss to explain why these objects were obscured to the player and why having more information made them appear more clearly.
In addition to developing the narrative concept, I also served as the game's writer and wrote all the dialogue for the game. I wrote the scripts in a word processor before converting them into Inky files which were then integrated into the game by the programming team.
While I have done narrative design work before this game, I feel like this game showcases the progress I've made as a game storyteller. I researched how people with degenerative memory loss speak and are spoken to by loved ones. I developed a narrative that was shaped by gameplay, not the other way around. Finally, I incorporated details that keen observers or multiple-time players would notice to reward players that deeply engage with the narrative.
